Fui atender ao interfone quando me deparei com o jovem me oferecendo os panos de pratos para comprar.
A bem da verdade, naquela semana, era a segunda pessoa que me oferecia panos de prato com o intuito de ajudar no orçamento.
_ A senhora não quer comprar? Perguntou o rapaz.
_ Quanto é? Perguntei.
_ Dois reais cada.
_ Você troca R$50,00?
_ Não dona, porque ainda não conseguir vender nenhum… sabe como é… feriado de Páscoa, tá todo o mundo viajando…
_ Então está difícil, porque eu até estou precisando trocar o dinheiro para pagar a moça que trabalha aqui. Mas acho que tenho R$5,00. Você pode fazer três panos por R$5,00? Perguntei-lhe.
_ Se a senhora tiver, faço.
Eu já estava entrando, quando ele me solicitou:
_ A senhora pode me arrumar um copo d’água?
Voltei-me de repente e analisei o rapaz: devia ter uns 18 anos no máximo. Alto, simpático e aparentemente humilde. Imaginei que não comera nada até àquela hora, já se aproximavam das 18 horas. Questionei-lhe:
_ Você comeu alguma coisa?
_ Não, dona. Eu saí cedo e como não vendi nada, não tive dinheiro para comer.
_ Então, entre. Vou lhe arrumar um café.
Pedi que se assentasse no sofá da sala enquanto lhe preparava um lanche.
Achei que seria difícil para ele comer no sofá. Permiti que se assentasse à mesa.
Enquanto saboreava, faminto, o lanche, me perguntou:
_ A senhora não sabe de alguém que esteja precisando de rapaz para trabalhar? Faço qualquer coisa: serviço de jardinagem, faxina…
_ No momento, não sei, mas vou perguntar às minhas vizinhas. De vez em quando alguma precisa.
_ Quantos anos você tem? Perguntei-lhe.
_ Dezenove.
_ Você tem irmãos?
_ Nós somos oito.
_ Você mora com a sua família?
_ Moro com a minha mulher e minha filhinha de seis meses. Não tenho pai nem mãe, e, dos meus irmãos, não sei o paradeiro.
_ Por quê?
_ Eu morava com meus pais até os meus 10 anos. Meu pai batia muito na gente e na minha mãe, por isso ela separou dele, ficando só com os filhos. Depois ela adoeceu: câncer na mama e como já estava avançado, distribuiu os filhos antes de morrer. Eu fui morar numa fazenda e, lá, fazia todo o tipo de serviço. Mas eu ainda era criança. Não sabia fazer direito, estava aprendendo… e por isso apanhava muito quando fazia errado. Decidi sair e vir morar aqui nesta cidade. Conheci esta senhora que faz os panos de prato. Ela tem uma filha, esta que moro com ela…
_ A sua mulher trabalha?
_ Tava trabalhando numa casa, sabe? A dona é até a proprietária do barraco que a gente mora. Mas aí depois de quinze dias de serviço, ela falou que pagaria a minha mulher só R$80,00 por mês. Sabe como é dona, a gente precisa, né? Minha mulher aceitou, não tinha jeito mesmo. Só que quando venceu o mês, a dona não pagou nada. Então eu pedi a ela que ficasse por conta do aluguel. Ela acabou concordando. Na verdade a gente precisava do dinheiro: comprar leite e comida para a criança, principalmente. Mas o teto também é muito importante e não íamos ter dinheiro para pagar o aluguel mesmo! Acabou que, pelo menos dele, ficamos livres naquele mês. Aliás, se a senhora souber de emprego para minha mulher também, eu agradeceria.
_ Onde você mora?
_ Na Saudade.
_ Nossa! É bem longe daqui…
_ Mas eu durmo no emprego, dona. Deixo para ir lá no final de semana.
_ E a sua esposa?
_ Ela também pode dormir. _ Mas e o neném?
_ A mãe dela cuida, dona. Nós precisamos trabalhar e, se for desse jeito, não tem problema. Tá muito difícil arrumar emprego. As pessoas desconfiam da nossa honestidade, e com razão: o mundo está muito violento. Até provarmos que somos honestos, precisamos ter chance e esta chance, ninguém dá. Não posso escolher, não. Faço do jeito que for melhor pra pessoa. Preciso é trabalhar para comer e dar de comer à minha filhinha.
_ Está bem. Vou fazer uns contatos com as vizinhas e ver se alguém está precisando. Deixo o meu telefone com você e você me liga daqui dois dias, certo?
