Houve um tempo em que se percorria mais assiduamente os corredores e o silêncio da biblioteca. Adentrar nela era o mesmo que penetrar num ambiente mágico. A parada nas estantes à procura de algum livro de pesquisa, muitas vezes, fez os olhos do leitor descobrirem outros livros estendendo a viagem e a permanência naquele ambiente aconchegante e prazeroso. Ter acesso a uma biblioteca dava uma sensação de importância, pois cultura e sabedoria ali caminham de mãos dadas.
A biblioteca foi criada para atender às necessidades reais da civilização moderna e, hoje, é uma instituição indispensável ao mecanismo social. A cultura tem de transcender o indivíduo, pois, constitui-se essencialmente de um acúmulo social da experiência por meio do qual os membros de cada geração possuem, pelo menos potencialmente, tudo o que seus predecessores já aprenderam.
Os livros são um dos mecanismos sociais para a preservação da memória racial, e a biblioteca é um aparelho social para transferir isso ao consciente dos indivíduos. Qualquer interpretação de uma sociedade tem de incluir uma explicação desse elemento social e da sua função na vida comunitária. Assim, surge a Ciência da Biblioteconomia, hoje, Ciência da Informação, tomando o lugar que lhe cabe entre os fenômenos a serem discutidos no conjunto das Ciências Sociais.
O fascínio pela leitura nasce da proximidade com os livros desde a infância. Folheá-los, sentir o cheiro das folhas, admirar as ilustrações e, sorver, qual um cálice de vinho, todo o seu conteúdo, se deliciando com cada capítulo, cada passagem, fazem com que o leitor se esqueça do lugar onde se encontra, tamanha é a concentração que o ambiente da biblioteca proporciona. O contato físico com os livros e a paixão pelos mesmos foram tão bem definidos por Clarice Lispector no conto “Felicidade Clandestina”, no qual muitos leitores, com ela, se identificam.
Alguém já disse que o livro nos permite efetuar várias viagens sem que precisemos sair do lugar, pois uma leitura bem apreciada consegue fazer com que nos tornemos personagens da história, vivendo e nos emocionando com ela, além de adquirirmos os conhecimentos necessários que nos proporcionam discursar, com propriedade, sobre alguém ou algum acontecimento.
Tal qual Miguel de Montaigne que teve uma existência quase monástica, Machado de Assis não teve necessidade de largar o remanso do Cosme Velho para viajar por meio dos livros e fixar a paisagem humana do Rio de Janeiro do seu tempo em suas obras clássicas; o mesmo se deu com Júlio Verne que não precisou morar em um submarino para escrever suas aventuras marítimas.

O bibliotecário é o administrador dos arquivos culturais da sociedade. A responsabilidade que ele assume com o seu ofício é explorar esses arquivos para o enriquecimento cultural de sua sociedade no melhor da sua habilidade. Junto a qualquer leitor, o bibliotecário deverá ajudá-lo a chegar a um método efetivo para atingir seu objetivo particular, salvaguardando da perda de seus esforços em atividades que são inúteis – biblioteconomia, economia de esforços na busca de conhecimentos – com relação ao próprio desejo do leitor.
Um equívoco constante é acreditar que o bibliotecário abarca o acervo total da biblioteca que administra. É obviamente impossível para qualquer indivíduo apreender o conteúdo dos inúmeros materiais bibliográficos lendo-os de capa-a-capa. O bibliotecário, em sua capacidade profissional, deve esforçar-se para ler acerca dos livros mais do que conhecê-los diretamente. O seu estudo básico é a história bibliográfica. Ele não é apenas um indicador do livro nas prateleiras e, sim, um historiador em potencial. A ele, cabe conhecer, não apenas a sociologia, a psicologia especializada, mas também, um tipo especial de ciência histórica.
Além de todas as questões a serem refletidas sobre a biblioteca e o bibliotecário, ainda há as demandas advindas com a rapidez da tecnologia, bibliotecas virtuais, internet e redes de informação computadorizadas, ao mesmo tempo em que amplia a sua atuação, uma vez que a informação está presente em todas as instituições e lugares de conhecimento da sociedade contemporânea.
