Madalena embala sua dor. Todas as manhãs, ela saúda o seu espelho e se veste para a vida. Despe a tristeza, contemplando os sulcos na face, causados pelos seus 90 anos. Ao seu lado, repousa Joana, fiel companheira de sua solidão. Joana não fala, não anda, apenas sorri. Sua expressão é a mesma desde quando chegou para fazer companhia à Madalena.
Carinhosamente, Madalena lhe troca as roupas todos os dias, escova-lhe os longos cabelos, ajeita-lhe os sapatos, enquanto divide com ela as poucas novidades que lhe chegam pelos jornais e na TV.
Passiva, Joana mantém-se sorridente.
Madalena lhe conta segredos, revive a juventude, lhe fala dos amores antigos. Vez por outra, Madalena lhe toca o rosto e, carinhosamente, deposita um beijo na face rósea e fria de Joana. Depois, Madalena retira-se do quarto e se dedica a seus afazeres domésticos solitariamente. Lava, passa, cozinha, enquanto o rádio reaviva suas lembranças ao tocar as músicas do seu passado.
À tarde, já livre de suas ocupações diárias, Madalena coloca Joana ao seu lado em frente à TV, enquanto a tarde se estende.
A noite cai.
Após o banho, Madalena ajeita o pijama em Joana e, logo, acomoda-a na cama.
Dá-lhe um boa-noite, reza e adormece novamente.
Nos dias sombrios em que Madalena se sente mais só, ela conversa mais com Joana.
Nunca lhe cobrou sequer uma palavra, pois Joana nunca a abandonou. Reconhece nela, a amiga fiel, que entende seus momentos de reclusão, seu saudosismo, sua solidão recolhida “para não pesar ninguém”.

Certo dia, Madalena despertou assustada. Sonhara que Joana desaparecera. Uma angústia, um enorme sentimento de vazio, confirmado pela ausência de Joana ao conferir a cama.
Madalena ergue-se num impulso à busca de Joana.
No chão, de bruços, ao lado da cama, Joana estática.
Madalena se alivia. Ergue Joana e a recoloca novamente na cama.
Apesar do susto, o conforto: Joana continua ali: muda, estática, mas sorridente.
Madalena limpa-lhe o rosto e a beija feliz; afinal, não lhe tiraram Joana, tudo não passara de um pesadelo. Sua companheira de todos os dias, a boneca Joana, jamais a abandonará.
